What is a ghost?
Matthew 12:43-45…“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, I will return from my house from which I came. And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they shall enter and dwell here; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”
Put simply, a “ghost” is a spirit who, (for whatever reason,) will not let go of the flesh. They have built their kingdoms of this world. The Bible states that there is a natural body, and a spiritual body. 1 Corinthians 15:44 These spirits will do anything to stay “in sin.” (Of the flesh.)
Many spirits remain unable to rest in peace because of their unwillingness to leave the “familiar” comforts of the physical world. This could mean anything from an unplanned death, in which someone is taken from this world in a sudden manner, such as an auto accident, or a child’s premature death. It’s human nature to not want to let go of our material possessions, like a financial fortune, or property, after working a lifetime in the flesh to achieve.
Sad to say, this is quite common. God made us three promises while we exist in the flesh. First, God promised us he would supply our needs. Jesus speaks of this in reference to the Sermon on the mount. (Matthew 6:8) Second.. God also stated that he would not give us into temptation more than we are able to bear. (1 Corinthians 10:13) And third, that his son Jesus would be with us, till the end of time. (Matthew 28:20)
As we progress in the flesh, our “wants” often become our “needs.” When we start out, we survive on the “necessities” of the flesh. As we become “more successful,” we “upgrade” our “fleshly” existence. (Promotion of material things.) What were once our “wishes” are now “requirements.” To the Father, needs are the “fundamentals” of the flesh. To mankind, our needs are what we have become “accustomed to.” In humankind, the more material things we have of the flesh, the more we want, as well as, having “need” of. Before you know it, your kingdom on earth has been built.
To let go of sin, “one” must let go of the flesh. Romans 8:10-14 Most however, have built their lives, (both spirit and flesh,) on earth. Jesus Christ spoke of this…Matthew 6:19-21: “Do not lay yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth or rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is your heart will be also. ”
Some spirits stay on to protect family with a need to remain behind and guard a loved one from harm in the flesh, as well as the spirit. Spirits that also stay behind, believe something done in their physical life was not completed, or remains unsolved. An unclear murder victim or an untrue cause of death leaves a spirit unable to rest in peace, and continue their spiritual journey.
All these spirits have one thing in common, the same thing that ruled their physical life. For some reason, they were not ready for the afterlife, by wanting to hold on to the material life. This does nothing to help. Our lord, Jesus Christ told us to be prepared by saying, “ treat everyday as if it were your last”, and that he would come as “a thief in the night”. His teachings also told us not to seek the things of the flesh, but of the spirit. Matthew 10:28
Ghosts come back in many forms, due to the fact of no physical body. Everything from “ghost lights” to life-like, “full body apparitions” have been reported. Voices recorded through EVP, (electronic voice phenomena), have also been heard. Are spirits trying to contact us from the grave? In some rare cases, yes. In most cases, they are simply reliving what they remember of a worldly life.
Hauntings are as individual as the spirit that remains. Ghosts can haunt because of the way they died, as well as the way they lived. Here are some causes of death that often end in spiritual unrest:
Poisoning: an intentional intake of a toxic material or an accidental overdose of a corrosive matter, (such as bleach). Drug overdose, a major problem in our world today, would also fall under this category. In most cases, people try to end their lives by overdose, (like sleeping pills), but are cheated out of a peaceful demise, when their stomach ruptures, causing immense discomfort, resulting in a slow, painful death. Feeling that they were cheated, they return as ghosts, wallowing in self-pity and seclusion.
Drowning: In some cases, drowning is a result of suicide from people jumping over cliffs to end their lives instantly. Several men and women of the military have passed due to vessel accidents due to war. (Sinking of the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941). Ocean liners have also taken the lives of many, (the sinking of the Titanic on April 5, 1912). The drowning victims from murders are the major result of hauntings, because the victim is seeking justice for closure. Spirits are witnessed everywhere in and around water areas.
Starvation: Simply, a lack of nourishment that is essential for physical survival. Over 30,000 children alone, die everyday on earth simply because they don’t have enough to eat. Starvation is an excruciating demise of a soul’s physical body, as well as one’s spirit. Their immense suffering gives a high likelihood of spiritual unrest, resulting in a form of a haunting.
Sickness of Disease: Countless people parish everyday because of illnesses too numerable to mention. Especially when an illness consumes a person of youth, the spirit feels cheated after a life of pain, only to die, in entrance to the spirit world. A lot of diseases result in ones inability to take care of one’s physical body. Addictions to cigarettes, alcohol, food, as well as other infatuations, even sex, has resulted in numerous deaths. Diseases have even wiped out entire villages and towns, resulting in mass ghostly uprisings in spirit, who feel they have been cheated by untimely deaths.
Immolation: Any death resulting from exposure to intense heat or flames. People who are burned alive have come back as fiery spirits because of their torturous demise. From fatal house fires, to skyscraper infernos, these accidents are documented throughout history. Cult sacrifices of people being “burned at the stake” were a form of punishment and religious offerings.
Terrorism, a major problem in our world today, has taken the lives of many, in revenge of one’s beliefs, by taking the lives of others. All types of life-ending measures because of hate, have consumed mankind, making mass murder a common occurrence here on Earth. Spirits and hauntings are just part of the result of terrorism.
Strangulation: whether self inflicted, or being choked to death at the hands of another, the method of death described here can be slow and agonizing, until the person loses consciousness. Hanging, common as punishment for crime in the 1800’s in America, was meant to break the victims neck instantly. Unfortunately, this procedure often failed, leaving the subject dangling for up to an hour before death occurred. Clearly, such suffering is suitable for producing a ghost.
Severe body or head trauma: the result of being crushed, trampled, mauled, or bludgeoned to death. Vehicle accidents take up a lot of this form of human demise. Several roadside memorials bear evidence of fatal accidents, in which spirits roam accident sites, as well as their place of burials. Mining cave ins, resulting in many deaths, haunt shafts all through this country.
Shooting: From those who are killed instantly by a single bullet, to those who slowly bleed to death from several gunshot wounds, death is often violent and unexpected. Battlefields, where a mass number of causalities are executed at once, phantoms, ghost lights, as well as sounds of great human suffering can be heard on a spiritual level. Ghostly soldiers, gunfighters, police officers, as well as victims from gang wars, and gangster causalities of the 1920’s and 1930’s, fall into this category.
Stabbing: Death accredited to wounds caused by a sharp object. These deaths cause graphic bloodshed, which follows their bodies in death. Murderers use knives as weapons to kill, stabbing their victims without incident, being able to hide the murder weapon. Ghosts have been witnessed wearing bloodstained garments, even sporting the weapon that killed them. Many of these crimes remain unsolved, with no closure to the spirit.
Decapitation or dismemberment: Death resulting in a missing body part prohibits closure to many spirits. Headless, the most common of disembodied ghosts, have been reported throughout history, hoping to complete their physical bodies in the afterlife. Beheadings were often performed as punishment, causing spirits to come back in search of missing body parts.
War: Battlefields and mass slayings. This is by far the most intensive haunting brought on by evil and hatred. To worsen the hauntings, mankind has made it "honorable" to murder in war, thus turning battlefields into, "Sacred grounds."
Even in death, spirits seek a physical life. The unwillingness to accept the spirit, or the spirit world has caused throughout history, countless spirits, far more than the population of the world, to roam, thus remaining in a spiritual unrest, causing haunting activity everywhere. These are the seven simple reasons why a spirit cannot find closure after death of the flesh:
1 Inability to forgive. Refusal to either absolve him or herself personally, or the person responsible for their demise.
2 Greed: Not letting go of worldly life, because of money, power, or material things.
3 A need to protect a loved one, who’s still in the flesh.
4 Revenge: an evil purpose to haunt the living in retaliation for what happened in reference to the victim’s suffering.
5 Not realizing that physical death has occurred. A lot of spirits don’t acknowledge passing into the spirit world.
6 Power: Reign over others, as well as material things can give a spirit a feeling of supremacy over property, family, and earthly kingdoms.
7 Closure: Those who seek from the depths of their souls, retribution for being unjustly victimized in the flesh.
In closing, spirits that remain here, whether it be for closure, revenge, hate or love, the bottom line is, you can not continue your journey in spirit, if the flesh is the meaning of your existence. People, who die unexpectedly, are taken from their physical bodies so fast, that they don’t even realize they are dead, and in the spirit world. Mankind will do anything to avoid the inevitable. To man, “death” is considered the enemy, and humankind will do anything, from denial, greed to possessive evil to protect it.
These “ghosts” continue to be so obsessed with the flesh, that they will do anything to “cheat” death, even after termination of the flesh has already taken place. Even the refusal to save their own spiritual salvation and a chance at everlasting life in paradise, or, not to mention, burning in a hellish eternal fire, means nothing when it comes to hanging on to this world.
If “one” cannot leave “flesh,” then he or she cannot leave “sin” itself, therefore they will haunt the flesh. A piece of advice: “Be that of the spirit, not of the flesh, for the flesh only lasts a short time, but the spirit lasts for Eternity.”
